Newcastle International Airport proudly announced the arrival of AEGEAN Airlines on June 14, 2023, marking the airline's first direct flight from the North East of England to Athens, Greece. AEGEAN, the largest Greek airline and a recipient of the prestigious 'Best Regional Airline in Europe' award for 11 consecutive years at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, will now operate direct flights between Newcastle and Athens every Wednesday and Sunday.
Athens, known as Europe's most historic city, offers visitors a wealth of breathtaking sights, iconic landmarks, and world-class museums. The new direct connection not only provides travelers with the opportunity to explore Athens but also facilitates onward travel to AEGEAN's extensive network, which includes popular Greek islands like Paros, Chios, and Lesbos, as well as various destinations across Europe and the Middle East, such as Larnaca and Istanbul.
Passengers aboard the inaugural flight were treated to complimentary refreshments and received a special commemorative certificate to celebrate the launch of the new route. Leon McQuaid, Director of Aviation Development at Newcastle International Airport, expressed his delight at the partnership with AEGEAN, emphasizing that Greece is a highly sought-after holiday destination for the North East region. The introduction of this new airline partner further strengthens the airport's connectivity options for travelers.
The direct service to Athens has long been an ambition of Newcastle International Airport, and the team was thrilled to finally bid farewell to the first flight to the Greek capital. Flights to Athens from Newcastle International Airport are now available for booking, with both economy and business class options on offer.
This new air link not only opens up exciting travel opportunities for passengers but also reflects the ongoing growth and expansion of Newcastle International Airport as a key regional hub for both business and leisure travelers.
