History
Airport History
Opened in 1986 to end the isolation of Greece's easternmost inhabited island. Because of the extremely short runway, only specific aircraft types can operate here, and the airport is often subject to closures during high winds. It remains a lifeline for the local community and a symbolic presence of the Greek state at the edge of the Mediterranean.
