History

Airport History

Named after the Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseas Elytis, who was of Lesbian descent. The airport was established in 1948 but saw its most significant transformation after 2017. Fraport Greece completed a brand-new, 7,000 m2 terminal building in 2020, replacing the outdated infrastructure and significantly upgrading the airport's ability to handle international jet traffic.
