Airport History
Operations began in 1959. The airport is named after Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire, who according to mythology landed on Lemnos. Due to its strategic position in the Northeast Aegean, it hosts the 130th Combat Group of the Hellenic Air Force. A new civilian terminal was inaugurated in 2001 to replace the older, smaller facility.
