Airplane Mode Explained: Why Pilots Still Ask You to Turn It On

Before every departure, passengers hear one of the most familiar announcements in commercial aviation:


“Please switch your mobile phones and other electronic devices to Airplane Mode.”

For most travellers, it’s simply another step before take-off. Others may wonder whether the instruction still matters in an era of advanced smartphones, onboard Wi-Fi and highly sophisticated aircraft.


If we can browse the internet and send messages while flying at 35,000 feet, why can’t we simply leave our phones in normal mode?


The answer isn’t about protecting the aircraft—it’s about helping pilots communicate as clearly as possible.


The Real Reason


A common misconception is that an active mobile phone could interfere with an aircraft’s flight controls or navigation systems.


In reality, modern commercial aircraft are designed to tolerate portable electronic devices, and there is no documented case of a passenger’s mobile phone causing a commercial airliner to crash.


The real concern is radio communication.


Throughout every flight, pilots remain in constant contact with air traffic control, receiving taxi instructions, departure clearances, weather updates and landing clearances. During take-off and landing especially, those conversations need to be as clear as possible.


A mobile phone left in normal mode constantly searches for a cellular network. As the aircraft moves rapidly between ground antennas, the phone repeatedly attempts to establish or maintain a connection.


One phone is unlikely to make any difference.


But on a full aircraft, more than a hundred phones could all be trying to connect at the same time.


Although the aircraft itself remains unaffected, these simultaneous transmissions can sometimes generate low-level electromagnetic noise. Pilots have occasionally reported hearing faint buzzing or clicking sounds in their headsets or radio equipment—similar to the interference many people remember hearing when a mobile phone was placed near a speaker.


The effect is generally minor, but aviation is built on eliminating unnecessary distractions whenever possible. Clear communication between pilots and air traffic control is essential, particularly during the busiest phases of flight.

What Airplane Mode Actually Does


Activating Airplane Mode disables your phone’s cellular transmitter, preventing it from searching for ground-based mobile networks. It doesn’t switch the device off, which is why passengers can still use approved functions such as onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth when permitted by the airline.


In simple terms, Airplane Mode isn’t there because pilots believe your phone could bring down an aircraft.


It’s there because even small sources of unnecessary radio interference are worth avoiding when safe and efficient communication is one of the foundations of modern aviation.
