Week 39 | 21–27 September 2026

Passenger demand remained resilient across Greece this week as the country’s airports continued delivering record traffic levels despite signs of normalisation at several mature destinations. At the same time, long-term infrastructure investment, strategic airport planning and the future management of Greece’s regional airport network remained firmly in focus, highlighting how sustained demand is increasingly being matched by preparations for the next phase of aviation growth.

Greek Airports Set Eight-Month Passenger Record as International Demand Normalises Across Key Destinations

Greece’s airports recorded their strongest eight-month performance on record, confirming that passenger demand remains robust despite a moderation in international arrivals at several established destinations during August. While Athens, Santorini, Kos, Kavala and Mytilene registered lower international passenger numbers compared with the same month last year, overall traffic continued reaching new highs as domestic demand, network expansion and strong performance across other destinations supported the national aviation market.

The latest figures illustrate a maturing tourism market rather than a weakening one. After several years of exceptional post-pandemic growth, some of Greece’s busiest destinations are experiencing a more balanced pace of demand, broadly reflecting wider trends observed across European aviation. Record passenger volumes continue demonstrating the resilience of Greece’s tourism sector while highlighting the importance of maintaining investment in airport capacity and regional connectivity as growth becomes increasingly distributed across the country.

Athens Airport Outlines Next Stage of Long-Term Expansion Strategy

Athens International Airport has provided further details on the implementation timetable for the next phase of its long-term expansion programme, outlining a structured roadmap that will increase capacity while maintaining uninterrupted airport operations. The updated planning includes the future development of the North Terminal alongside phased infrastructure works designed to accommodate continued passenger growth over the coming years.

The announcement represents the next stage of a programme first outlined earlier this year, shifting the focus from strategic planning towards implementation. As Greece’s principal international gateway continues experiencing sustained demand, the phased expansion aims to ensure sufficient capacity for future growth while strengthening Athens’ role as one of Southeast Europe’s leading aviation hubs.

Fraport Greece Enters New Investment Phase Following Record Passenger Growth

Fraport Greece has announced the beginning of a second major investment cycle across its regional airport network following another year of strong passenger growth. The company expects traffic across its 14 airports to reach approximately 38.7 million passengers in 2026, marking a fifth consecutive year of growth while exceeding earlier expectations despite ongoing geopolitical uncertainty.

Company executives also highlighted stronger passenger demand during the traditional shoulder months of October, November, March and April, supporting Greece’s broader objective of extending the tourism season. Alongside the €125 million redevelopment of Kalamata Airport, scheduled to begin following the concession’s commencement in November, further expansion projects are planned for Corfu while additional investment is being evaluated for Kos. Thessaloniki Airport is also expected to set a new annual passenger record, reflecting continued demand across northern Greece. Fraport AG additionally confirmed its intention to participate in the forthcoming tender process for Greece’s remaining 22 state-operated regional airports, subject to the final terms of the concession.

Competition Builds for Greece’s Remaining Regional Airport Concessions

The concession process for Greece’s remaining 22 state-operated regional airports has moved into its next phase after three major investment groups submitted expressions of interest, marking another significant step in one of the country’s largest aviation infrastructure projects. The tender covers airports distributed across mainland Greece and the islands, with the objective of attracting investment aimed at improving facilities, operational efficiency and regional connectivity.

The process has attracted strong interest from both domestic and international investors, underlining continued confidence in the long-term prospects of the Greek aviation market. Once completed, the concession is expected to play an important role in modernising regional airport infrastructure, supporting tourism development and strengthening connectivity across areas that remain outside the existing airport concession networks.

Additional Industry Developments

  • Routes & Networks Latest

The latest Routes & Networks: Rolling Daily Updates continued tracking airline network developments across Europe and beyond, highlighting new route launches, frequency adjustments and schedule refinements as carriers finalise their Winter 2026/27 programmes while continuing to shape Summer 2027 planning. The updates reflect the industry’s ongoing focus on strengthening connectivity and aligning capacity with evolving market demand.

  • EUROCONTROL European Aviation Overview – Week 39 EUROCONTROL’s latest European Aviation Overview reported that the network averaged more than 35,000 daily flights during Week 39, remaining above the same period last year while operational performance continued improving across much of the European network. The figures highlight the resilience of European air traffic as the industry transitions from peak summer operations towards the winter scheduling season, with network efficiency continuing to improve despite sustained traffic volumes.

  • Rising Operating Costs Continue Putting Pressure on Airfares

Airlines continue facing upward pressure on operating costs, with fuel prices, maintenance expenses and broader inflationary factors expected to influence ticket pricing into 2027. While strong passenger demand has supported traffic growth across Europe, airlines remain focused on balancing competitive fares with rising operational expenditure, suggesting that price volatility is likely to remain a feature of the market over the coming months.

  • EU Confirms New Air Passenger Rules on Cabin Baggage from 2027

The European Union has approved new rules that will introduce greater standardisation for cabin baggage allowances from 2027 as part of a wider reform of passenger rights. The changes aim to improve transparency for travellers and create greater consistency across European airlines, while allowing carriers time to adapt their commercial policies before the new framework enters into force.
