Week 41 | 05–11 October 2026

Confidence in the Greek and Balkan aviation sector continued strengthening this week as airlines, airports and infrastructure projects demonstrated sustained momentum despite the industry’s transition towards the Winter 2026/27 operating season. From international recognition for operational excellence and continued passenger growth to record airline performance and long-term infrastructure investment, this week’s developments highlight how regional aviation continues balancing immediate operational success with long-term strategic expansion across Southeast Europe.

AEGEAN Named Europe’s Safest Airline in 2026 Safety Ranking

AEGEAN has been recognised as Europe’s safest airline in the newly released 2026 European Airline Safety Index, securing the highest overall score among the continent’s leading carriers. The Greek airline achieved the highest overall rating after being assessed across safety record, certification, operational safety systems, fleet profile, pilot training and financial stability.

The distinction reinforces AEGEAN’s position as one of Europe’s leading carriers at a time when passenger confidence, operational resilience and regulatory compliance remain central to airline competitiveness. While the index should not be interpreted as an absolute measure of airline safety, the ranking highlights the company’s consistent operational performance and further strengthens Greece’s profile within the European aviation market.

Athens International Airport Reports Continued Passenger Growth in September

Athens International Airport recorded further passenger growth during September, with total traffic increasing by 3.5% compared with the same month last year as both domestic and international demand remained resilient. The latest figures continue the airport’s strong performance throughout 2026, reflecting sustained demand across leisure, business and connecting traffic despite the gradual seasonal slowdown following the summer peak.

The results underline Athens’ continuing role as Greece’s primary international gateway and one of Southeast Europe’s fastest-growing aviation hubs. As the airport progresses with its long-term expansion programme, continued traffic growth reinforces the importance of additional capacity to accommodate future passenger demand while maintaining operational efficiency.

Air Serbia Achieves Record Passenger Performance Across September and the First Nine Months of 2026

Air Serbia has reported its strongest September, third quarter and first nine months on record, carrying approximately 3.8 million passengers between January and September while continuing to expand its position as one of Southeast Europe’s leading network carriers. During September alone, the airline transported more than half a million passengers, supported by continued network expansion and strong demand across its European and long-haul services.

The latest results demonstrate the continued recovery and expansion of Serbia’s aviation market while reinforcing Belgrade’s growing importance as a regional hub. Alongside network growth and increasing passenger volumes, the airline’s performance reflects broader demand across the Balkans as carriers continue strengthening connectivity throughout Southeast Europe.

First Operational Steps Begin for Heraklion’s New Kastelli Airport

Preparations for the future operation of Heraklion’s new international airport at Kastelli have entered an important new phase as the first administrative and operational procedures begin ahead of the airport’s planned opening. The latest developments move the project beyond construction alone and towards establishing the framework that will support the airport’s future day-to-day operations.

Once completed, Kastelli will replace Heraklion’s existing Nikos Kazantzakis Airport, significantly increasing capacity on Crete while supporting the island’s long-term tourism and economic development. As one of Greece’s largest ongoing aviation infrastructure projects, the airport is expected to strengthen international connectivity and provide additional operational resilience for one of the country’s busiest tourism destinations.

Additional Industry Developments

  • Routes & Networks Latest

The latest Routes & Networks: Rolling Daily Updates continued tracking airline network developments across Europe and beyond, highlighting new route launches, frequency adjustments and schedule refinements as carriers continue implementing their Winter 2026/27 programmes while gradually shaping Summer 2027 planning. The updates reflect the industry’s continued focus on strengthening connectivity and aligning capacity with evolving market demand.

  • AEGEAN Returns to Damascus After 14 Years AEGEAN has announced the launch of direct services between Athens and Damascus, restoring scheduled flights to the Syrian capital for the first time in fourteen years. The new route represents a significant expansion of the airline’s Eastern Mediterranean network and forms part of its broader strategy to strengthen connectivity across neighbouring markets as regional aviation continues recovering.

  • Croatia Airlines Adjusts Winter Capacity While Maintaining Flight Network

Croatia Airlines will maintain broadly similar flight levels during the Winter 2026/27 season while modestly reducing overall seat capacity as part of its ongoing fleet transition strategy. The adjustments reflect the airline’s continued fleet modernisation programme while maintaining connectivity across its domestic and international network.

  • Chios Airport Project Remains on Schedule for 2027 Completion

Government officials have reaffirmed that work on the Chios Airport upgrade continues according to schedule, with completion expected during 2027. The project remains an important regional infrastructure investment aimed at improving operational capability, supporting tourism growth and strengthening air connectivity for the island.
