The third week of March 2026 has been a whirlwind for the Greek aviation sector. From humanitarian "animal airlifts" at Athens International to staggering growth statistics released by the HCAA, the industry is shaking off the quiet of winter and bracing for a record-breaking spring.

1. The "Pet Airlift": A Heartwarming Moment at AIA

The most trending news story of the week involved a special government-organized Aegean Airlines flight that touched down at Athens International Airport (ATH) on Wednesday, March 18.

As geopolitical tensions flared in the Middle East, the Greek Foreign Ministry coordinated a unique evacuation flight from Abu Dhabi. What made this headline-worthy was the inclusion of 45 pets alongside 101 Greek nationals. In a week dominated by technical data, the images of dogs and cats being reunited with families in the arrivals hall reminded us of the critical role airports play as lifelines during international crises.

2. Traffic Surge: The Numbers Are In

This week, the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) released data for the first two months of 2026, and the results are historic.

  • Total Growth: Passenger traffic across all 39 Greek airports rose by 9.1% year-on-year.

  • Athens Dominance: AIA handled nearly 4 million passengers in Jan–Feb alone, a 10.8% jump.

  • Regional Stars: While Thessaloniki remains a powerhouse (+7.1%), Santorini (JTR) has seen a massive 27% rebound in traffic as it recovers from previous infrastructure-related slumps.

3. Google Trends: The "Corfu Countdown"

Google search data from March 15–22 shows a massive spike in queries for "Easter in Corfu." With Orthodox Easter falling on April 12 this year, the "Island of Music" is the #1 trending destination for domestic and international travelers alike.

Airlines have responded by adding nearly 2 million additional seats for the summer 2026 season. Small regional airports like Kefalonia (+14.3%) and Chios (+11%) are trending as travelers look for "Set-Jetting" locations—destinations made famous by films and TV series.

4. Operational Challenges: The Ionian "Brake"

Despite the growth, a note of caution emerged this week regarding the Ionian Islands. Industry experts warned of potential congestion at airports like Corfu and Zante due to new, more rigorous security checks and ongoing runway maintenance funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). Travelers heading to the Ionian for Easter are advised to arrive at the airport at least 2.5 hours early.
