In a move set to bridge the Mediterranean with the North Atlantic, Greece’s flagship carrier, AEGEAN, and Icelandair have officially entered into a strategic codeshare partnership.

The agreement is part of AEGEAN’s strategy for the continuous boost of its network connectivity, expanding its presence in markets with growing tourism interest.

The two airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the sidelines of the 82nd International Air Transport Association (IATA) Annual General Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro. The agreement aims to significantly enhance air connectivity between Greece and Iceland, expanding network reach and providing seamless travel opportunities for passengers of both carriers.

Seamless Travel Under a Single Booking

Once implemented, the codeshare agreement will allow travelers to book flights across the combined networks of AEGEAN and Icelandair using a single reservation. Passengers will enjoy a unified travel experience, which includes streamlined connections, coordinated flight schedules, and through-checked baggage from their point of origin to their final destination.

Through this network integration:

  • Icelandair passengers will gain effortless access to a vast array of domestic and regional destinations across Greece served by AEGEAN’s extensive hub network.

  • AEGEAN passengers will unlock convenient, streamlined routing to Iceland via Icelandair’s network.

While both airlines have confirmed that the specific routes and initial schedules included in the codeshare will be finalized and announced in the near future, the partnership opens up major commercial and tourism potential for Greek airports.

Executive Leadership Insights

Spokespersons from both airlines expressed high optimism about the strategic value of the agreement, particularly regarding the booming leisure travel sectors in both nations.

Michalis Kouveliotis, Deputy CEO of AEGEAN, commented:

"Our partnership with Icelandair creates new connectivity opportunities between Greece and Iceland, further expanding the options we offer to our passengers. Through this partnership, passengers of both airlines will have access to more destinations via seamless connections and a unified travel experience."

Bogi Nils Bogason, President and CEO of Icelandair, added:

"We are excited to announce our strategic partnership with AEGEAN, opening opportunities for our passengers traveling between Greece and Iceland. We welcome AEGEAN as a valued partner and look forward to working together to make the journeys of our passengers smooth and enjoyable."

Strategic Impact on Greek Tourism and Airports

For the Greek aviation market and regional airports, this partnership aligns with a broader strategy to tap into high-yield, emerging markets with growing tourism interest. Icelanders have shown a steadily increasing appetite for Mediterranean summer destinations, while Greece continues to position itself as a year-round travel hub.

By utilizing AEGEAN's primary hub at Athens International Airport (ATH) and potentially expanding to key seasonal holiday hubs, this codeshare will make reaching the Greek islands and mainland regional airports significantly easier for Nordic travelers, boosting international passenger traffic across the country.
