Autumn Disturbance Brings Lowering Ceilings, Rain Bands, and Shifting Winds Across Greek FIRs

As October concludes, the Greek flight information regions experience a shift toward dynamic late-autumn weather patterns. A low-pressure system moving across the Aegean basin and Ionian sectors introduces heightened humidity, scattered rain showers, and lower ceilings during the first half of the week. While operational conditions begin to stabilize with partly sunny skies heading into Thursday and Friday, flight dispatchers and aircrew should anticipate variable cloud bases, localized rain-induced visibility drops, and shifting wind flows across major hub corridors.

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (LGAV)

Daytime highs cool from an early-week peak of 21°C down to 16°C–18°C mid-week before stabilizing around 19°C toward the weekend. Overnight lows remain consistent between 13°C and 15°C. Winds transition from light easterly flows early Sunday to gustier northerlies (12–18 mph) mid-to-late week.

Operational Impact: Moderate-to-high precipitation risk (55%–75% chance) with rain showers and lowering cloud ceilings from Sunday night through Wednesday. Expect temporary VFR disruptions and wet runway operations. Conditions clear to partly sunny skies on Thursday and Friday, though lingering light rain remains possible into Saturday. Cooler air masses late-week improve density altitude and overall departure efficiency.

Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" (LGSK)

Daytime highs holding steady between 17°C and 21°C, with cool overnight lows dipping to 10°C–14°C. Prevailing northerly to north-westerly airflow dominates early in the week before slackening to lighter variable breezes.

Operational Impact: Periodic cloud cover, overcast patches, and light rain bands early in the week present temporary ILS approach considerations and wet runway conditions for Runway 16/34. Approaching the weekend, conditions stabilize with returning high-VFR visibility and low convective activity.

Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (LGIR)

Moderate daytime highs reaching 18°C–22°C, with mild night temperatures holding near 15°C to 17°C. Westerly to north-westerly marine airflow persistent across the Cretan Sea at 5–11 mph.

Operational Impact: Cloud build-ups along Cretan terrain bring intermittent rain showers Sunday night through Wednesday (55%–75% precipitation probability). Crosswind awareness is recommended for Runway 09/27 during afternoon sea-breeze convergence, with overall visual approach availability restoring Thursday and Friday as conditions shift to partly sunny.

Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" (LGRP)

Highs maintaining comfortable levels around 21°C to 23°C (73°F–74°F) with overnight lows hovering near 16°C to 18°C (61°F–66°F). Light to moderate variable breezes transitioning to southerly/southwesterly flows mid-week.

Operational Impact: Unrestricted visibility generally prevails across the Dodecanese corridor, though early-morning stratus banks and periodic late-night showers around mid-week may cause temporary local reductions. Aircraft turnaround and ground operation conditions remain generally favorable across the sector.
