Autumn Fronts Bring Lowering Ceilings and Convective Activity Across Greek FIRs

As October advances, the Greek flight information regions transition into active mid-autumn meteorological conditions. A trough passing through the Aegean basin brings heightened humidity, occasional shower bands, and scattered squall line activity early in the week. While operational conditions stabilize toward the weekend with returning VFR clarity, flight dispatchers should anticipate dynamic ceiling drops, localized rain-induced visibility reductions, and shifting wind fields across major hub corridors.

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (LGAV)

Highs cooling from early-week peaks near 27°C down to 17°C–21°C as a cold front moves through mid-week. Overnight lows ranging between 13°C and 18°C. Light to moderate winds shifting from southerly gradients early Sunday toward northerly flows (7–11 knots) later in the week.

Operational Impact: Convective risk with thunderstorms and lowering ceilings on Sunday/Monday, followed by light rain and reduced visibility through Wednesday. Expect temporary VFR disruptions during shower passage. Cooler air masses mid-to-late week restore nominal density altitude and optimized engine efficiency for heavy departures.

Looking down a narrow city street framed by tall concrete apartment buildings with protruding balconies. Many balconies feature extended fabric awnings, green potted plants, and street lamps hanging above the roadway in warm golden sunlight.

Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" (LGSK)

Daytime highs holding between 16°C and 23°C, with overnight lows dipping to 12°C–17°C. Northerly wind flow prevailing at 12–17 knots mid-week. Rain showers and heavy overcast early in the week clearing to mostly sunny conditions by Thursday through Saturday.

Operational Impact: Low ceilings, rain bands, and gusty northerlies on Sunday–Tuesday present temporary ILS approach conditions and wet runway performance considerations on Runway 16/34. Conditions improve significantly late-week with returning high-VFR approach availability.

Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (LGIR)

Moderate daytime highs holding between 23°C and 25°C, with comfortable night lows hovering near 17°C to 19°C. Westerly to north-westerly marine airflow persistent across the Cretan Sea at 12–18 knots.

Operational Impact: Intermittent cloud build-up along the Cretan terrain with periodic coastal showers. Standard crosswind awareness required for Runway 09/27 operations during afternoon sea-breeze convergence, but overall visual approach availability remains good outside convective cells.

A wide view of a Mediterranean harbor filled with docked sailboats, tall masts, and small fishing boats in calm, reflective blue water. On the left breakwater stands the massive stone Venetian fortress (Koules) under a clear sky.

Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" (LGRP)

Highs holding around 24°C to 26°C with overnight lows around 18°C–20°C. Light to moderate north-westerly airflow prevailing across the south-eastern Aegean sector.

Operational Impact: Unrestricted visibility generally failure-free across the Dodecanese corridor, with minor operational delays possible only during localized low-stratus early morning banks. Turnaround ground conditions remain favorable.

Looking down a narrow, paved medieval alleyway flanked by ancient stone walls and buildings with arched doorways and wrought-iron lanterns. Stone archways cross overhead, and a few people walk toward the foreground under warm evening ambient light.
