Mid-Summer Forecast for Greek Gateways

As Greece enters the peak of the summer season, a robust high-pressure system dominates the Balkan region, bringing clear skies, high temperatures, and stable flight conditions across the Aegean and mainland flight information regions (FIRs). For flight crews, dispatchers, and incoming travelers, terminal conditions over the coming days will be characterized by typical summer heat and regional wind patterns like the Meltemi.

The table below breaks down the 7-day terminal forecast trends for Greece's four primary international airport gateways:

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (LGAV)

The capital's hub is experiencing a steady climb in temperatures, with daytime peaks transitioning from a comfortable 30°C up to 36°C by mid-week. Winds remain relatively light to moderate out of the north-northwest.

  • Operational Impact: Exceptional visibility remains the standard. Ground crews should prepare for intense midday heat on the apron, though overnight cooling down to 22°C offers solid recovery windows.

Thessaloniki International Airport "Makedonia" (LGTS)

Northern Greece is seeing the highest thermal peaks in this cycle. Temperatures at LGTS will hover between 34°C and a sweltering 37°C during peak afternoon intervals.

  • Operational Impact: With temperatures pushing toward the high 30s, dispatchers should monitor density altitude calculations carefully for heavy aircraft performance margins during late afternoon operations. Skies remain completely clear with zero precipitation risk.

Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (LGIR)

Crete enjoys slightly moderated conditions compared to the northern mainland, courtesy of the regional maritime air currents. Highs will range from 27°C to 32°C, supported by steady northerly winds.

  • Operational Impact: Perfect VFR (Visual Flight Rules) conditions prevail. The consistent coastal breeze keeps the runway environment free of localized heat haze, ensuring highly predictable traffic handling.

Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" (LGRP)

Diagoras is locked into a classic Southeast Aegean summer pattern. Daily highs are holding firm between 29°C and 32°C, accompanied by overnight lows that rarely dip below 23°C.

  • Operational Impact: Pristine visibility and zero cloud cover are guaranteed over the next week. The steady maritime wind profile presents standard crosswind components well within normal operational thresholds for all arriving commercial airframes.
