Late-July Forecast for Primary Greek Gateways

As Greece moves into the heart of high summer, heat accumulation across the southern Mediterranean is reaching its peak. High pressure remains firmly entrenched over the Balkan Peninsula and Aegean Sea, driving strong thermal conditions on the mainland and bringing the classic summer Meltemi winds to life across maritime routes. For flight crews, dispatchers, and ground operations, terminal conditions will be marked by intense afternoon heat on the apron, pristine VFR (Visual Flight Rules) visibility, and distinct coastal wind dynamics.

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (LGAV)

The capital hub faces intense late-July heat, with daytime maximums starting near 35°C and pushing up to 38°C to 39°C during peak afternoon hours around mid-week. Overnight cooling brings temperatures back down to a warmer 25°C baseline. Winds will generally blow from the N/NNW at 10–18 knots, with moderate gustiness during peak heating intervals.

Operational Impact: Density altitude will be a major consideration during peak hours (12:00–16:00 local), requiring careful payload and performance calculations for heavy departures. Excellent ceiling and visibility (CAVOK) will persist continuously. Apron teams should prepare for severe heat stress conditions during turnarounds.

Thessaloniki International Airport "Makedonia" (LGTS)

Northern Greece continues to experience severe afternoon heating, with high temperatures ranging from 36°C to 38°C for much of the week. Late afternoon thermal convection over the nearby northern mountain ranges may trigger localized isolated cloud build-ups, though the airfield itself will remain largely clear. Winds will remain light to moderate (5–12 knots), variable in the mornings and settling into a sea breeze from the south-southwest by mid-afternoon.

Operational Impact: Continuous high density altitudes will affect maximum takeoff mass (MTOM) for long-haul routes. Clear visibility remains intact, though mild heat haze may develop over the asphalt during late afternoon peak heating.

Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (LGIR)

Crete sits directly under the influence of the Aegean Meltemi regime. Temperatures at LGIR will remain capped in a more comfortable range of 30°C to 33°C, but strong northerly winds (N/NW) will gust between 20–28 knots during the afternoon. Overnight lows hover around 24°C.

Operational Impact: While thermal conditions are significantly moderated compared to the mainland, ground operations and light aircraft must factor in steady, gusty crosswinds/headwinds depending on the active runway configuration. Visibility will remain exceptional with zero cloud cover issues.

Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" (LGRP)

Rhodes maintains a very consistent coastal summer profile. High temperatures will hold steady between 31°C and 34°C, supported by moderate northwesterly winds off the Aegean (12–22 knots). Overnight temperatures will remain warm, floating near 25°C.

Operational Impact: Pristine operational conditions with VFR prevailing at all times. The consistent coastal breeze provides good cooling for ground support equipment, and crosswind vectors remain comfortably within standard operating limits for commercial airliners.
