Transition to Late-Autumn Meteorological Patterns Across Greek FIRs

As the calendar turns to November, the Greek airspace transitions deeper into a true late-autumn regime. While prolonged periods of high pressure continue to afford generous intervals of clear skies and solid Visual Flight Rules (VFR) visibility, early-month weather charts reflect a noticeable cooling trend across the mainland and the Aegean basin. Flight dispatch and ground crews should prepare for crisper ambient temperatures, more frequent dynamic pressure shifts, and occasional early-morning low-ceiling formations or coastal mist.

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (LGAV)

Daytime maximums settling into a much cooler range of 20°C to 23°C, dropping to brisk overnight lows of 11°C–14°C under alternating clear to partly cloudy skies. Moderate northerly to north-easterly gradients develop periodically.

Operational Impact: Density altitude constraints are virtually non-existent under these cooler conditions, optimizing maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) calculations for heavy long-haul departures. Flight operations should remain alert to occasional crosswind components associated with developing regional pressure troughs

Thessaloniki Airport "Makedonia" (LGSK)

Daytime highs cooling noticeably to 16°C–19°C, with overnight lows dipping to 9°C–12°C. Variable, light northerly to north-westerly airflow dominates (4–10 knots), with periods of increased humidity and low-level cloud coverage expected during late-night and early-morning hours.

Operational Impact: Moderate thermal inversions over the Thermaic Gulf may trigger localized morning mist or low-ceiling formations, briefly affecting early visual departure bands. Payload and engine efficiency remain optimal with reduced air density concerns.

Heraklion International Airport "Nikos Kazantzakis" (LGIR)

Daytime temperatures hovering between 22°C and 25°C, easing to comfortable overnight lows of 15°C–18°C. Maritime breezes moderate to 10–14 knots, occasionally shifting from northern to variable land-sea directions during nocturnal transition periods.

Operational Impact: Stable marine-influenced conditions prevail with good overall visual approaches. Ground handling operations benefit from mild midday temperatures, though teams should monitor for localized moisture convergence and brief early-morning visibility reductions near coastal sectors.

Rhodes International Airport "Diagoras" (LGRP)

Mild, stable Mediterranean pattern with daytime highs reaching 23°C to 26°C, cooling off comfortably to night lows around 16°C–19°C. Gentle north-westerly to variable airflow dominates the Dodecanese corridor.

Operational Impact: Unrestricted visual and instrument approach paths remain standard. The transition away from high summer heat reduces thermal turbulence along the final approach paths, ensuring smooth handling for regional and international turnaround banks.
