An intense mid-summer meteorological shift is impacting the Athinai Flight Information Region (FIR). A powerful, stationary Heat Dome has established itself over central and southern Greece, pushing continental air masses to extreme heights. Simultaneously, tight barometric gradients between the high-pressure system over the Balkans and the low-pressure system over the Levant are intensifying the Meltemi wind cycle across the Aegean.

For flight crews, dispatchers, and ground handling teams, this week presents an "explosive operational cocktail": severe peak afternoon thermal loads on the mainland combined with high-velocity, gusty northern wind fields over the island gateways.

Athens International Airport "Eleftherios Venizelos" (LGAV)

The capital hub is pushing into sweltering territory this week. Daytime peaks will start around 34°C and climb to a blistering 37°C to 37.5°C by mid-to-late week. Overnight cooling provides a small relief window, with lows dropping to 23°C - 26°C. Winds will primarily blow from the northeast/north-northwest at 10–15 knots.

Operational Impact: CAVOK (Ceiling and Visibility OK) conditions are guaranteed all week. However, high daytime temperatures will impact air density. Dispatchers should keep a close eye on aircraft performance calculations, while ramp supervisors must enforce heat safety protocols for ground crews handling heavy midday turnarounds.

Crete is benefiting from its seasonal maritime buffering, keeping it significantly cooler than the baking northern mainland. Highs will hold steady between 28°C and 31°C. However, the Meltemi is blowing hard from the north, creating steady coastal winds fluctuating between 15 and 22 knots, with higher localized gusts.

Operational Impact: Excellent VFR (Visual Flight Rules) visibility remains the standard. The strong northerly breeze prevents localized heat haze, but flight crews should expect minor mechanical turbulence on final approach due to the coastal terrain interaction. Crosswind limits should be cross-checked for lighter regional airframes.
